The Authority is keen and committed to technological advancement using artificial intelligence in enhancing urban mobility, hence its commitment to provide world-class ITS innovations in its key urban road networks in Nairobi metropolitan and its environs.

The Authority has continued to maintain and optimize Intelligent Transport System (ITS) installed on twenty (20no.) intersections along Western Ring Roads, Ngong road, and Eastern missing link roads in Nairobi. The Project involves the management of the Installed intelligent Traffic signal systems, vehicle detectors, Urban Traffic Controllers, surveillance system (CCTV), and a communication network; established in the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) located at the KURA headquarters.

The Intelligent Transport System has impacted the transport system along the Nairobi Western Ring Roads (NWRR), actuated (Ngong road Phase 1 & 2 and Nairobi Eastern missing links) and adjacent roads by enabling the road users to make informed decisions; Improved safety, mobility, reduced travel time, reduced emissions and increasing the efficiency of the existing transport infrastructure.

Expansion Plans

The organization has partnered with KEXIM to expand ITS and install BRT infrastructure. The expansion plans will cover 20 intersections and the construction of BRT line 5 Linking Thika road to Mombasa road via Outering road and the establishment of a Traffic Management Center (TMC). This project will cost approximately Kshs. 6 Billion.
